Here's the link to the recent report on National Public Radio about contra dancing. Traffic on the contradancelinks.com site had been, mostly between 275 and 300 visits a day during the past several weeks. It bumped to 458 on Friday, July 2 (the day of the story) and 399 on Saturday.
Dancers, musicians and callers have started to find my entry on Facebook, so if you want me to add you as a friend (and vice-versa) go ahead. No promises that I check my page on a regular basis, though.
Note: Message from Mark Stowe about a contra dance at Burning Man:
Hi, I am organizing what will apparently be the first contradance camp in the 20+ years of Burning Man (a week of extreme art in an extreme environment. Even though there are a large number of 'burners' who are contradancers, we need to get this message out to as many people as possible in particular to be able to line up callers and musicians.
In the discussion group
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/burningmancontradance/ I lay out the logistical challenges and a preliminary plan for funding and otherwise making such a camp a reality (it will be easiest if you choose 'view all' and click the arrow that will reverse the default reverse chronological order).
Thanks and best wishes, Mark Stowe
If you are looking for contra dance information and cannot find it
here, please e-mail me
or check one of the other sites listed below as no one person keeps
up with everything that is happening on the contradance scene.
- The New England Folk Festival Association provides an exhaustive
list of contra links.
- Ted Crane has been compiling a database of dances,
musicians, and callers. Very extensive with information about
future dances across the country.
- Gregg Scragg's The Dance Gypsy has a long history as a print publication for dance information in New England and New York State along with a festival calendar, then the addition of a web site and now as a web site covering the United States and a multitude of types of dance.
- Dwayne Johnson has created a contra
dance map with links for the entire United States.
- Kiran Wagle's A
Contradance Page is more than a simple page and includes links to
a wide range of articles, groups, information, and dances and while it has not been updated in a while, remains worth visiting for the material that is not time or site sensitive.
- And, of course, there is the Country Dance & Song Society (CDSS),
which has plenty of information about contra dancing along with links and contact
information for numerous dance groups.
Bands and callers are listed twice, once in the region in which
they are based, the other in the "All Bands and Callers" page.
Organizations are listed once, just in the region in which they are
based (although if they have an activity in another region, they will
be listed there also). The United States is divided into several
different regions. The dance at Rehoboth, Massachusetts is the one I
attend most often.
